A Night at Karlstein Returns in a Digitally Restored Blu-ray Edition

Some films are more than classics. They become traditions. A Night at Karlstein / Noc na Karlstejne  is exactly that kind of beloved Czech musical – remembered for its catchy songs, playful romance, and gentle humor that works across generations.

It is now available in a new digitally restored Blu-ray edition, bringing the film to life in HD – and most importantly, with English subtitles, so international viewers can fully enjoy this Czech favorite.

“No Woman May Spend the Night at Karlštejn”… Really?

The legend is clear: no woman is allowed to stay overnight at Karlštejn Castle. But once love, jealousy, and courage step in, royal rules suddenly feel negotiable.

Queen Elisabeth of Pomerania decides to break the ban and sneaks into the castle disguised as a page – determined to find out what truly happens there when women are forbidden. On the same night, young Alena attempts a similar trick after making a bold bet: she can spend the night at Karlštejn dressed as a man.

What follows is a delightful chain of romantic mix-ups, witty misunderstandings, and unforgettable musical moments – made even richer by unexpected noble visitors arriving at the worst possible time.

Why It Remains One of the Most Loved Czech Musicals

This film has something you cannot manufacture: pure charm. It is playful, elegant, romantic, and warmly human. And the songs by Karel Svoboda became true classics – the kind of melodies people still hum decades later.

The story is based on the stage play by Jaroslav Vrchlický (1884), but the 1973 film adaptation remains the most famous and widely loved version.

Fun Facts Fans Love

  • In the final scenes, when Elisabeth (played by Jana Brejchová) arrives at Karlštejn on horseback, she uses the same saddle seen in Three Wishes for Cinderella (1973), ridden by Libuše Šafránková.

  • Filming did not always go as planned. Director Zdeněk Podskalský reportedly kept a diary – and one entry mentions a rainy day when nothing was filmed at all… while two actors enjoyed the “free time” a bit too much.

  • The original stage play features a jester character named Rolnička, who acts as a mischievous narrator. For the film, this character was removed to keep the story tighter and more romantically focused.
