The Christmas Season Has Officially Begun

The streets are lighting up, shop windows sparkle with gifts, and the air fills with the scent of cinnamon and cloves. That can only mean one thing — Christmas is coming!
And with it comes the most magical Czech and Slovak tradition of all: Christmas fairy tales that make the holidays truly special.

Of course, Three Wishes for Cinderella (Tři oříšky pro Popelku) remains the queen of Czech Christmas — a timeless story where love, courage, and kindness win every time. Every December, we fall in love again with the radiant Libuše Šafránková and her fairy-tale world.
But beyond Cinderella, there are many other Czech classics that deserve a place in your festive watchlist.

The Proud Princess (Pyšná princezna) – The Queen of All Fairy Tales
A legendary film that never grows old.
Made in 1952, The Proud Princess tells the story of a vain princess, Krasomila, and wise King Miroslav, who disguises himself as a gardener to teach her humility and love.
Alena Vránová and Vladimír Ráž shine in roles that defined generations, and the film’s gentle humor and magical charm make it a Czech national treasure.

The Prince and the Evening Star (Princ a Večernice) – Where Magic Meets Romance
Directed by Václav Vorlíček in 1978, this enchanting fairy tale combines adventure, love, and breathtaking visuals.
Libuše Šafránková as the ethereal Evening Star and Juraj Ďurdiak as the brave Prince Velen are unforgettable — facing the fearsome storm master Mrakomor in a fight for love and light.
Beautiful, poetic, and full of atmosphere — a true gem of Czech fantasy cinema.

Darbujan and Pandrhola – A Timeless Tale of Justice
This 1959 classic by Martin Frič stars Jiří Sovák and Rudolf Hrušínský in a story about a humble man who befriends Death and uses this strange alliance to help the poor.
A moral tale filled with humor and humanity, it’s a perfect reminder that true riches come from kindness, not gold.

The Princess Jasněnka and the Flying Shoemaker – When Love Takes Flight
One of the most beloved fairy tales of the 1980s.
A humble shoemaker, Jíra, and the radiant Princess Jasněnka (played by Michaela Kuklová) defy fate and soar above obstacles — quite literally!
Directed by Zdeněk Troška, this heartwarming and imaginative film combines romance, courage, and a touch of magic that never fades.

Three Veterans (Tři veteráni) – Wit, Wonder, and Werich
A masterpiece of humor and imagination from Oldřich Lipský, based on a story by Jan Werich.
When three retired soldiers receive magical gifts from mischievous sprites, their adventures become a funny yet thoughtful lesson about greed, wisdom, and friendship.
Starring legends Jiří Sovák, Rudolf Hrušínský, and Lubomír Lipský, this is Czech humor at its finest.

Long Live Ghosts! (Ať žijí duchové!) – A Classic That Still Lives On
This delightful 1977 musical comedy has been digitally restored for Blu-ray, ready to charm a new generation.
Full of laughter, songs, and childhood adventures, it reminds us that even ghosts can have big hearts.
With Vlastimil Brodský, Jiří Sovák, and young Dana Vávrová, this film is pure joy from start to finish.

Cozy Evenings Call for Czech Fairy Tales
When it’s raining, snowing, or freezing outside, there’s nothing better than curling up under a blanket with a Czech classic.
Whether you’re flying with Jasněnka, laughing with the veterans, or revisiting the proud princess, these stories are more than movies — they’re part of Czech Christmas magic.
