Synopsis
One morning, the sun fails to rise, but the king is reluctant to address the issue of the delayed dawn. Soon, the Sun Lady arrives at the castle with a complaint about the witch from the Black Forest who killed and roasted her golden cockerel. Although the king hesitates, he decides in favor of the Sun Lady. The cockerel comes back to life, and the sun rises, but the enraged witch predicts to the king that his daughter, Princess Jasněnka, will marry a humble cobbler. While the princess doesn't mind, the king does and locks his daughter in a tower to prevent the curse. Meanwhile, the witch encounters two craftsmen in the forest who argue about who is better in their trade. She gives them materials and a three-day deadline to make the best of their skills. Blacksmith's apprentice Ondra creates an iron hen that runs and lays iron eggs, while shoemaker Jíra makes wings out of fine leather and flies away. Upon learning about the princess in the tower, he flies to the balcony to see her. They fall in love, and when the king catches them, they manage to escape at the last moment on Jíra's wings. They live happily in a small room, where Jíra makes shoes and Jasněnka sells them at the market. However, the witch's daughter, Černava, begins to envy Jasněnka's happiness and kidnaps her, imprisoning her in her castle. Jíra is left with only a red shoe, which shows him the way. He drinks a magical potion of forgetfulness but remembers only when he finds something he never lost.
