Every Week Seven Days (1964) – A Restored Czech-Slovak New Wave Gem 🎬✨

The Czech-Slovak New Wave of the 1960s brought some of the most daring and artistically rich films in European cinema, and Every Week Seven Days (Každý týždeň sedem dní, 1964) is a hidden gem of the movement. Now available in a beautifully restored Blu-ray edition, this film by Eduard Grečner offers a unique, poetic, and slightly rebellious take on youth, love, and the changing times of 1960s Czechoslovakia.

The film follows a group of young university students in Bratislava, capturing their dreams, ambitions, and emotional struggles against the backdrop of socialist realism. Věra Křesadlová, one of the most recognizable faces of the New Wave, delivers a standout performance, while the film’s atmospheric cinematography, timeless themes, and unforgettable soundtrack featuring The Beatles (Please Please Me, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, This Boy) add to its undeniable charm.

Although Grečner was still a newcomer to directing, his artistic ambition is evident. He balances between avant-garde stylization and sincere storytelling, influenced by his mentor Štefan Uher, under whose supervision the film was completed. At times experimental, Every Week Seven Days stands as a brave and unconventional critique of socialist realism, gently subverting the era’s expectations while remaining deeply human and engaging.

Now, thanks to a stunning Blu-ray restoration, audiences can experience this forgotten classic with enhanced visuals and sound, bringing the magic of 1960s Bratislava back to life.
