It’s been a long time since I felt like saying this about a family film without hesitation: I recommend it. And then Sugar Candy (Cukrkandl) arrived. Fresh, gentle, visually gorgeous - and refreshingly not a “typical fairy tale,” which is exactly why it works.
No princes, no throne drama. Just a small town, a smart young doctor, a mysterious inherited villa, a greenhouse full of surprises, and an adventure that can be playful, slightly spooky, and unexpectedly touching.
The town of Medov, a “haunted” house, and a dental office no one visits
Anička Jesenská (Tereza Ramba) inherits a house with a greenhouse and a dental office in the town of Medov. As a trained doctor, she wants to help children above all - especially because her mother died after a painful “procedure” performed by a local blacksmith who was considered an “expert” in dentistry.
But no one comes. The villa has a reputation in town as a haunted house people are afraid to approach. Rumor has it a spring there flows with water from hell.
Then everything changes: thanks to an exotic Peruvian herb from the greenhouse, Anička discovers that dental treatment doesn’t have to hurt. Suddenly her office is full. But Medov already has a competing dentist - Dr Druml (Maros Kramar) l- and he’s not happy. A one sided fight begins, and before long, a group of local kids joins Anička’s side.
A film that shifts moods with real ease
Sugar Candy balances several tones beautifully. One moment it feels like children’s adventure, then it leans into a lightly ghostly mystery, and at times it even brushes against drama. The mood changes feel natural, never forced.
The audiovisual side is a real delight too:
-
striking cinematography
-
costumes that are a feast for the eyes
-
a strong music score
-
and the inherited villa itself is unforgettable, with a rare, geometric style you don’t see every day
Yes, the opening is slower and the runtime could arguably be trimmed by a few minutes, but overall it’s one of the best recent films in the family genre.
Why it hits especially well right now
In a world that can feel harsh and uneasy, Sugar Candy is a soft, comforting watch for all generations. Not naive - just kind. The kind of film that reminds you movies aren’t only made to impress, but also to genuinely lift you up.
