At the age of 85, renowned actor Alois Švehlík, a prominent figure in Czech film and television, known also for his distinctive dubbing voice, has passed away. His death was announced by the spokesperson of the National Theatre, Tomáš Staněk.
Alois Švehlík made a lasting impression on audiences through numerous remarkable roles. He starred in films such as "Smoke on the Potato Fields" (Dým bramborové natě), "Young Man and White Whale" (Mladý muž a bílá velryba), "The Death of Beautiful Deer" (Smrt krásných srnců), and the children's sci-fi film "Odysseus and the Stars" (Odysseus a hvězdy). He also had significant roles in TV series like "Good Water" (Dobrá Voda), "There Were Six of Us" (Bylo nás šest), and the cult classic "Black Barons" (Černí baroni). A younger generation appreciated his role as Professor Rypar in Jiří Mádl's film "On the Roof" (Na střeše), for which he was nominated for a Czech Lion award. Švehlík excelled in television dramas as well, notably portraying an aggressive husband in "Snake Dance" (Hadí tanec) and a State Security officer in "Swingtime."
His distinctive voice made him a sought-after dubbing artist, lending his voice to international stars such as Jack Nicholson, Anthony Hopkins, Robert De Niro, Charles Bronson, and Burt Lancaster. He also dubbed popular foreign TV series like "The Professionals," "Schimanski," and "Dempsey and Makepeace." He received several František Filipovský Awards, including one for lifetime achievement in dubbing in 2014.
Born in 1939 in Pardubice, Švehlík briefly worked in industry before deciding to pursue theater. He performed in regional theaters in Most, Olomouc, and Liberec. His film career truly began after moving to Prague, where he became a long-standing member of the National Theatre drama ensemble. He also performed on other prestigious Prague stages, including the Činoherní klub, JEDL theater company, Viola Theatre, Divadlo Na Jezerce, Dejvice Theatre, and Divadlo Na zábradlí. His role in the play "From Foreign Parts" (Z cizoty) earned him the Divadelní noviny Award in 2005, along with nominations for the Thalia and Alfréd Radok Awards. In 2021, he received the Thalia Award for lifetime achievement.
Alois Švehlík was the father of three children, among them actor David Švehlík, with whom he performed in films such as "Operation Silver A" (Operace Silver A) and "Alois Nebel," as well as in several stage productions.
His legacy in Czech culture remains indelibly marked by his contributions to film, theater, and dubbing.
