Roger Chartier (*1945) is one of the leading French historians focused on intellectual history. He collaborated with the Annales review, worked at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), and has been lecturing at the Collège de France since 2006. The book 'On the Edge of the Cliff' presents a collection of twelve essays in which the author discusses or debates contemporary historiographical concepts, primarily French ones. He develops his themes in three areas: examining certain methods or concepts, critically engaging with authorities such as Michel de Certeau, Michel Foucault, and Louis Marin, and finally confronting history with neighboring disciplines, particularly geography, sociology, philosophy, and literary studies.
