Beschreibung

The book by Dobrava Moldanová, Czech Literature in the Time of Modernism (1890-1968), presents the key moments of this golden period of Czech literature in chronological order, alternating programs, personalities, and significant works. It shows how various ideological currents and poetics coexisted alongside each other, how authors built upon domestic tradition while also accepting impulses that came to us from abroad due to the traditionally significant translation activity. It pays attention to personalities and movements that had long remained in the shadow of interest, such as literature associated with the theme of Czechoslovak legions or the works of Catholic and exile authors, and it brings closer the literary events of the 1940s and especially the 1950s, which were far from being merely a time of socialist-realist desert due to the banned authors. The conclusion of the work consists of chapters dedicated to the literature of the 1960s, characterized by the effort to restore the diversity of Czech literature. ***** Prof. PhDr. Dobrava Moldanová, CSc. (1936) has dealt with the personalities of Czech prose of the 20th century in a number of publications - Božena Benešová (1967), Studies on Czech Prose at the Turn of the Century (1993), Czech Stories (2007), On Sandy Soils (2011), At the Edge of the Canon (2021).
