Beschreibung

Naturalist and theologian Georg Wilhelm Steller joined the Great Northern Expedition in 1741, during which Captain Vitus Bering and his crew searched for a maritime route from Asia to America. Although they never reached the American mainland, they made history: they discovered the siren, also known as the ochechule or sea cow. About a hundred years later, Hampus Furuhjelm, the Finnish governor of the Russian territory of Alaska, sent his men to search for the skeleton of this massive marine mammal, which was said to have disappeared a century earlier. In 1952, John Grönvall, a restorer at what is now the Finnish Museum of Natural History, was tasked with renovating the skeleton of Steller's sea cow, which was already extinct by that time. The Last Siren is a breathtaking adventure across centuries and a fascinating look at the theme of species extinction, but also a story of great human ambitions and the desire to resurrect what humanity has destroyed in its ignorance. The novel originally describes the dilemmas facing humanity and is a rare type of work that can change human attitudes.
