He comes into contact with soldiers and civilians on both sides of the front line: loyalists, separatists, Russian occupiers, and Crimean Tatars, among whom he ultimately finds refuge. Despite the heavy theme, the novel about the unfolding crisis in Ukraine is full of black humor and grotesque elements.
