The Battle of Britain was one of the most pivotal moments of World War II. It marked a turning point when Great Britain stood alone against the seemingly unstoppable military might of the Third Reich. In the summer of 1940, after the evacuation of British Expeditionary Forces from Dunkirk and the fall of France, Germany planned to gain air superiority in preparation for an invasion of Great Britain. The defense of Britain during the Battle of Britain relied on the courage of just 2,937 British and allied pilots. Pilots of various nationalities flew and fought together against the Luftwaffe, which outnumbered the Royal Air Force (RAF) in both aircraft and pilots. This gigantic aerial battle, which took place from July 10 to October 31, 1940, also involved 88 Czechoslovak pilots alongside British and allied aviators. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill referred to the pilots of the Battle of Britain as 'The Few.' Among this brave handful rightfully belongs Jozef Kaňa, a native of Krupina and a pilot of the legendary Polish 303 Squadron. ************ Never in the history of human conflict have so many owed so much to so few individuals. Winston Churchill, August 16, 1940, RAF Uxbridge
