The book is a probe into the life and functioning of the financial guard from 1918 to 1948. Forgotten smuggling affairs from the Novohradsko and Kaplicko regions were uncovered by sifting through dozens of boxes of records from district and regional courts, district offices, and police headquarters, as well as departmental bulletins and periodicals of the time, memoirs of former financiers, and many other sources. The publication also provides a detailed mapping of the events of September 1938 in South Bohemia and does not overlook the tumultuous period after World War II. Many photographs and memories of the financiers themselves are published for the first time from the legacies of former members of the financial guard. The text introduces stories of smuggling sugar, currency, Nazi publications, and other goods. It illustrates the difficulties faced by financiers and gendarmes with vagrants, beggars, and poachers, and recalls the stories of František Hovorka, Jaroslav Novák, and Václav Klimeš, who lost their lives while on duty at the border in the Novohradské Mountains.
