The anthology Philosophy of Love and Friendship presents the reader with a selection of the most important contemporary studies from Anglo-Saxon philosophy of love and friendship, both systematic and historical. Systematic texts from contemporary theory (Part II) and Neoplatonic ethical concepts (Part III) are supplemented with historical interpretations of classical Greek philosophy (Part I) to make their main source of inspiration accessible. Ancient authors paid considerable attention to the psychological aspects of human life, and their texts have thus become a natural inspiration not only for contemporary virtue theory but also for the philosophy of emotions and human relationships. Socrates', Plato's, and Aristotle's treatises on love have provided contemporary thinkers with a fundamental framework for distinguishing and addressing key questions. Researchers studying ancient philosophy, on the other hand, are influenced by the growing interest in emotions from contemporary philosophy. Not only have today's scholars begun to study the concept of love in ancient authors, but they have also enriched this exploration with modern questions arising from the current understanding and experience of love and friendship.
