Frederica Merrivill arrives in London with three younger siblings and a determination to find a suitable husband for her beautiful sister Charis. She seeks out the Marquess of Alverstoke, a distant acquaintance of their late father, and asks him to secure their entry into the select London society. Unusually straightforward, Frederica impresses the marquess so much that, to his own surprise, he agrees to her unexpected request. His heart is warmed by the thought that he is doing this in defiance of his self-absorbed sister. Frederica eagerly paves the way for the perfect suitor for Charis while also taking care of two mischievous younger brothers and a wild hunting dog that is very reluctantly getting used to the rules of the big city.
