Beschreibung
Kosmas' Czech Chronicle (in Latin, Chronica Boemorum) is the oldest Czech chronicle, i.e., a chronicle concerning the history of the Czechs. The original text was written in Latin and its author was Kosmas, the dean of the Prague Chapter of St. Vitus. It was likely composed between 1119 and 1125. ***** The chronicle stands at the very beginning of Czech historiography and is generally regarded as one of the most significant literary works produced in the Czech lands during the Middle Ages. At the same time, it is one of the most important historical sources for understanding early medieval Czech history. ***** The influence of Kosmas' Chronicle on the understanding of Czech medieval history is so fundamental that some historians are attempting to create a so-called non-Kosmas conception of Czech history, i.e., to determine from other sources what has entered historiography as Kosmas' invention or his specific perspective on his contemporaneity.
