Beschreibung
Few have impacted the development of Czech post-war prose as significantly as Josef Škvorecký. His debut novel Zbabělci elicited sharply negative responses from communist critics in 1959, but it soon became clear that this book fundamentally and permanently changed the socialist-realist order in Czech literature. In the 1960s, Škvorecký entertained readers with detective stories and humorous short stories, while he could also pull out some works from the 1950s that he had to hide from the public eye for security reasons. The core of his work consisted of readable stories 'from the present,' rich not only in humor, irony, and sarcasm but also in nostalgia, melancholy, and existential anxiety, and above all, ruthless and unsocialist realism. The first volume of a biographical monograph by an experienced literary historian closely follows Škvorecký's life and creative journey from his first literary attempts to his departure for Toronto exile in 1969.
