About restless tango shoes, life escapades, and love in all its forms ***** When someone leaves a shoebox with an infant on the doorstep of a convent in Buenos Aires, the nuns name the little girl Fabiola. The rebellious Fabiola soon shows a special talent — she can find the perfect pair of shoes for every person. She becomes the best shoe seller in the city and also — to the horror of the nuns — the mother of Lita, a girl as headstrong as she is. ***** The revolutionary era forces mother and daughter to flee Argentina, but the dream of Europe soon fades, and they find themselves on a small windy island near Canada, moving into a sailors' lodging called Bethlehem. In this vibrant heart of the island live many eccentric characters; among them is the hostess's deaf daughter Oona, who becomes Lita's best friend. As Lita tries to navigate her new environment, her fate is completely changed by the annual visits of the traveling cinema man Mr. Saito, who brings moving pictures from around the world to the isolated island.
