The House of Harrach has made a mark on Czech and Moravian history and landscape more than is generally known. Its history dates back to 1272, when the brothers from the South Bohemian village of "Horachy" are mentioned as witnesses to a donation deed of the Rosenbergs in favor of the Vyšší Brod Monastery. The Czech family then branched out into Austrian territories and its name changed to "z Harrachu". The Harrachs were successful entrepreneurs and thoughtfully built textile manufactories. The jewel of their business was the famous glassworks in Harrachov. Count Jan Nepomuk was among the great Czech patriots and patrons. He contributed to the development of tourism and nature conservation in the Krkonošsko region and to the introduction of skiing in the Czech lands.
