During World War II, the II (intelligence) department of the Ministry of National Defense of the Czechoslovak government-in-exile in London carried out a number of special intelligence operations, during which several dozen members of the Czechoslovak foreign army in the West were air-dropped behind enemy lines to assist the domestic resistance movement. The only exception was Major of Artillery Jaroslav Krátký, a member of the Czechoslovak foreign army in the West, who was not sent to enemy territory by air drop but by land route. Maj. Art. Jaroslav Krátký, as the only participant in Operation KARAS, left in the spring of 1942 as press attaché Jaroslav Karas to Turkey, where he became involved in the activities of the Czechoslovak intelligence office based in Istanbul, with the future mission of traveling again by land to Slovakia, where he successfully established radio telegraphic communication with London. After the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising, he served as the liaison officer of the Czechoslovak Ministry of National Defense at the headquarters of the 1st Czechoslovak Army in Slovakia.
