When the director of Kolya makes a new film, Czech film lovers pay attention. This week, Jan Svěrák's brand new comedy arrived in our store, and it sails straight for the heart.
Five Plums (Pět švestek, 2026) is a warm comedy about refusing to let age have the last word. Věra, an aging woman living alone, decides to bring her old friends together for one last sea voyage in search of past happiness. The group sets out for idyllic coves and sunsets, and their greatest obstacle turns out to be not the ocean and not old grievances, but their own adult children, who simply cannot understand the elderly travellers' adventurous spirit.
The cast is a parade of beloved Czech faces: Dana Syslová, Petr Kostka, Lenka Termerová, Jan Vlasák, Oldřich Kaiser, Petra Špalková and Marek Adamczyk. Svěrák directs them with the same gentle humanity that once won him the Academy Award, and the result is a film that is funny, tender and quietly rebellious at once.
Thirty years after Kolya, which we celebrated in a recent anniversary article, it is a joy to see Jan Svěrák still telling stories about people who refuse to give up on life. Five Plums fits his filmography beautifully.
The film is available on Blu-ray in full 1080p HD and on DVD. Both discs are in Czech, audio and subtitles alike, which makes them a lovely present for parents and grandparents.
