The Lovers of an Old Criminal / Milenky stareho kriminalnika DVD
Synopsis
How to avoid marriage? Pretend to be a criminal! Cyril Pondělíček (V. Burian) arrives at the castle of his nephew, the "former count" and now factory owner Pardon (J. W. Speerger). At a ball, Pardon became enamored with an unknown girl, but today he receives a telegram from another factory owner, reminding him of his agreement to marry the owner's eccentric daughter, Fifi (A. Ondráková). Pardon devises a plan and bribes his uncle to impersonate him, assuming Fifi will reject him and he can find his true love. However, Fifi, encouraged by her father, is determined to announce their engagement within 48 hours. A series of madcap events ensues, culminating in Pondělíček's claim that he is actually the thief and murderer Cannibal, who looks identical to him, to scare Fifi off. Instead, she becomes fascinated by him. Adding to the chaos, Pondělíček's former lover, the clairvoyant Štefanie (B. Kysílková), who has been searching for him for 19 years, and her daughter Olga (V. Hlavatá), who is being sought by Pardon, also get involved. This silent film by Svatopluk Innemann, based on a screenplay by Josef Skružný and Elmar Klos, was one of Vlasta Burian's first roles and was heavily inspired by American slapstick comedies. The film was restored in 2008 and gained a tinted version in 2014, with musical accompaniment by the band Neuvěřitelno.
