Synopsis
Dr. Verner, a dentist, wants to get married but has never been able to tolerate any woman besides his housekeeper, Amálka. He decides to find a simple girl from a lower social class and mold her according to his ideals. His initial attempts fail, and he retreats to Karlovy Vary to recuperate. There, Amálka meets Milča Janotová, a young woman she used to nanny, and tells her about Dr. Verner's peculiar plan. Upon returning to Prague, Milča devises a plan of her own. She visits a pub to learn about the behaviors of people from the outskirts of society through a vagrant named Vendelín Pleticha. Disguised, she approaches Dr. Verner, who is so impressed that he takes her in for reformation, even though his medical practice suffers. Eventually, Dr. Verner falls in love with Milča.
