Synopsis
Karel Janota's daughter, Karla, is about to marry the wealthy lawyer Jaroslav Kříž. However, on the wedding day, instead of the ceremony, she faces an appendectomy. After a successful surgery, Karla also develops severe pneumonia and even suffers a heart collapse. Fortunately, she is in the care of the best Prague surgeon, Dr. Hegla, who saves her life. Karla falls in love with the attractive doctor and starts seeing him. Hegla's resigned wife silently endures her husband's infidelity to preserve their family. Meanwhile, Karla's fiancé struggles to cope and commits suicide. When Karla becomes pregnant with Hegla's child, the doctor distances himself from her, already having a new "patient." Despite this, Karla is determined to keep the baby. Marie Pujmanová's novel about a young woman who defies bourgeois conventions to pursue free love and even unwed motherhood garnered significant interest upon its release in 1931. German director Leontine Sagan (Girls in Uniform) sought to adapt it as early as 1933. However, the adaptation was eventually directed by screenwriter Otakar Vávra in 1940. The result stands as one of the best works in Czech cinema during the occupation. Audiences still appreciate its brilliant screenplay, direction, and the stellar performances of Otomar Korbelář, Adina Mandlová, Světla Svozilová, Zorka Janů, and Svatopluk Beneš.
