Synopsis
Prague, 1412. Pope John XXIII announces the sale of indulgences, but the people of Prague, enlightened by the teachings of Master Jan Hus, rebel against the Pope's immoral decree. Hus preaches at the Bethlehem Chapel, while Queen Žofie urges him to moderation. Companions Jan, Stašek, and Martin are arrested near the Týn Church for defending against the fanatical priest Pekel, who preached about indulgences. The mayor promises Hus their release, but all three are eventually executed publicly. The Pope excommunicates Hus, forcing him to take refuge at Kozí Hrádek, where he continues his sermons. The Pope requests King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia to compel Hus to attend the Council of Constance. Despite warnings from friends, Hus travels to Constance, assured of a safe return by a letter of safe conduct from Roman and Hungarian King Sigismund. However, upon his arrival in Constance, Hus is imprisoned…
