Imperial and Royal Field Marshal / C. a k. polni marsalek DVD
Synopsis
Although the popular Prague theater comedian Vlasta Burian was a frequent guest in film studios during the silent film era, it was sound film that successfully utilized the versatility and uniqueness of his talent. His talent included verbal expression, musicality, and an undeniable gift for imitations of all kinds. His first sound film from 1930, "C. a k. polní maršálek" (The Emperor and the Golem), directed by Karel Lamač, became a hit. Audiences flocked to cinemas not only to hear the Czech language but especially to see and hear Vlasta Burian, who convincingly proved that it was his gift of speech that made him a first-class comedian and a remarkable actor. The film was based on a farce by E. A. Longen, a comedy about Captain František Procházka, who takes advantage of a situation to try on a marshal's uniform. Mistaken for the supreme commander of the Austrian army, he causes a stir at a remote unit in Galicia. The film overflowed with situational comedy and verbal wit, enhanced by directorial ideas. It convincingly demonstrated that Czech filmmakers quickly mastered not only new technology but also found an adequate film language. The film combined artistic success with extraordinary technical and popular acclaim.
