Josef Hupka fails his high school graduation because he loves music more than school. He runs away from home and joins a group of wandering musicians. He marries a violinist named Hanča and they have a son named Hynek together. His happiness comes to an end when Hanča dies of typhoid fever. Hupka struggles to make a living by playing music on the streets. One day, lawyer Multrus hears his "Humoresque" and offers him a job in his office, on the condition that he plays in his quartet. Hynek studies law and Multrus hires him as an articled clerk, partly because Hynek is an excellent violinist. Multrus's wife Julie, a former vaudeville performer, falls in love with Hynek and seduces him. The office is assigned to handle the will of a certain Svída, and Hynek successfully resolves the case. However, when he is supposed to present the evidence in court, the will disappears. Julie stole it on the orders of her former lover, Forejt. Old Hupka manages to trickily retrieve the will. In a hysterical fit, Julie begs Hynek for forgiveness and love. Multrus, witnessing the scene, dies of shock...
