During a routine exploratory mission to a distant neutron star, one of the Academy's spacecraft intercepts a brief transmission in an unknown language. Although a large part of the galaxy has already been explored by humanity, very few other intelligent species have been found. Before the ship leaves the star's orbit, it sends out several satellites to search for the source of the signals. After five years, one of the satellites identifies the origin of the signal as extraterrestrial, or at least potentially extraterrestrial. The Contact Society, a group of powerful and wealthy individuals fervently funding research into the existence of extraterrestrial life, shares this opinion. This Society provides the Academy with a ship to search for the unidentified extraterrestrial source of the transmission. Its members intend to participate in the expedition led by Captain Priscilla "Hutch" Hutchinson. Across countless stars, from one alien world to another, Hutch and her crew follow the wandering signal, but they find only puzzles and deadly surprises.
