Description
If there is a child with a disability in the family, in this case with autism, it may often happen that their healthy sibling is overlooked. At the very least, this is how the child may feel. Healthy siblings in such cases are confronted with a whole range of stressors that increase their risk of developing mental difficulties and adaptation problems. Because this is a significantly neglected group of children, the main goal of this publication is to present one option for their support - the STEPS program (Group Therapeutic-Educational Program for Siblings of Children with Autism). The program focuses on strengthening the sibling relationship, imparting knowledge about autism, and practicing problem-solving related to living with a sibling. It is based on a clear theoretical foundation (cognitive-behavioral therapy, experiential reflective learning) and has undergone research evaluation, which showed that it leads to positive changes in the established target areas. It is positively received by participants and parents. The book is divided into a printed and an electronic part. The printed part describes the theoretical foundations, research, and especially the specific form of the STEPS program. The electronic part contains materials for the practical application of the program.
