Description
The novella The Fans of the Marquis de Sade begins as a protocol from the trial of the courtesan Gabrielle, a maker of ostentatious and obscene fans for her friend, the author of scandalous sexual visions and a prisoner of the revolutionary regime. From this basic plot, a dramatized reflection on the themes of fantasy and reality, violence and pleasure, courage and cruelty unfolds in a collage of records, letters, and fantastic visions, in which alongside the feared marquis also appears the author of the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Citizen, the revolutionary tribunal-executed Olympe de Gouges (1748–1793), and the bishop of the Yucatán archdiocese and destroyer of Mayan books Diego de Landa (1524–1579).
