Description
The book To Hell with Studying represents the first anthology of Byzantine begging poetry in our country. Although this genre has been on the periphery of European literature since its inception, it is appealing not only to specialists but also to lay readers. It allows a glimpse into the everyday life of Byzantine society - with a great deal of humor and irony, it describes, for example, the struggles and joys of a poor teacher, the pale envy over the 'luxury' of craftsmen, tells of the tricks used by a mischievous novice to escape the strict order of his monastery for a while, and sometimes about an unrecognized poet leaving Constantinople or, conversely, a poet residing abroad who imbues his verses with longing for home. The publication is accompanied by an introductory study that outlines the historical background of the poems' creation, the famous era of the reign of the emperors from the Komnenos dynasty (11th-12th centuries), as well as the contemporary literary and cultural context.
