Description
Jiří Langer and Jiří Orten represent two poles of Judaism and Czech identity, literature and faith: Langer returns from modernity to Hasidism, but sometimes interprets it in a very modern way. Orten has almost freed himself from Jewish traditions, but under the pressure of the approaching Shoah, he returns to the Scriptures. Czech-Jewish prayers are arranged according to the liturgical year of Judaism: prayers related to individual holidays are matched by theme or mood. The two prayer books are supplemented by a double 'minyan', a prayer quorum: The first features excerpts from the works of other Czech-Jewish authors, from the national revivalist Kapper to Orten's contemporaries. The second quorum consists of excerpts from those who have distanced themselves from Jewish piety, yet still work within it – or from those who were not born into Judaism but fell in love with the house of Israel, its faith, and poetry. This last point also applies to the editor of the book, Martin C. Putna.
