The legendary Vitruvius' treatise On Architecture is the only surviving work of its kind from Roman scholarly literature. The Roman architect Vitruvius created a fundamental textbook of ancient architecture, in which he encyclopedically summarized all the necessary and utilized knowledge and insights from the field of technical sciences, as was customary in his time. He approached his field as a set of three disciplines: architecture as the art of building, construction techniques, and mechanics. He systematically discusses all the topics and problems that, according to his experience, an architect of his time must deal with: the selection of a site for construction, its orientation and layout based on hygienic reasons and knowledge of human physiology, as well as insights from meteorology and climatology; he includes geology, mineralogy, and botany in the study of building materials; for the construction of aqueducts, he requires knowledge of soil science and hydrology; the construction of theaters is conditioned by knowledge of acoustics and musical theory; he derives the aesthetics of architecture from the analysis of the human body's structure and the laws of optics; as a builder who knows how to construct, he does not hesitate to thoroughly explain methods of demolition, especially for the purpose of war; in the context of reconstructing machines, he describes all known and used devices up to the construction of clocks and water...
