Description
On July 7, 1944, the American 15th Air Force conducted its first major raid from its Italian airfields on the distant synthetic fuel production plants in the Upper Silesia region. As a result of fierce attacks by enemy fighters, heavy anti-aircraft artillery fire, and accidents, the Americans lost 26 heavy four-engine bombers and 3 escort fighter aircraft. The German and Hungarian air forces lost 12 fighters in the actions defending the strategically significant Upper Silesian refineries. Intense battles with losses on both sides also took place that day over Moravia and Slovakia. The book vividly describes this important combat operation as experienced by dozens of American, German, and Hungarian aviators, as well as witnesses on the ground.
