Description
World Reading for Schoolchildren is a series of richly illustrated, sensitively retold, and abridged works of world literature. The Captain's Daughter is a historical novel that captures the end of the 18th century, when Empress Catherine II, known as Catherine the Great, ruled Russia. In 1773, a Cossack named Yemelyan Pugachev declared himself the deposed Tsar Peter III and rejected the empress's rule. A rebellion broke out that shook the foundations of the monarchy. The central theme of the book, depicting Pugachev's rebellion in Russia from 1772 to 1774, is the love affair between a nobleman's son and the captain's daughter, whose parents became victims of the uprising, with the fundamental conflict being the contradiction between the humane nature of a young person and the drastic aspects of serfdom. The author's last major work presents the first poetic and truthful image of Pugachev and his rebellion.
