Description
Žofia Bosniaková (1609 – 1644), a figure surrounded by legends about the lady of Strečno Castle, a charitable, just, and pious woman. What was her origin? Where did her family come from and how did they gain a place among the Hungarian aristocracy? Where did she grow up and what kind of upbringing did she receive? How did her first husband's family treat her? Where did her interest in charity and helping the poor and needy originate? Who was her second husband, František Vešeléni? What activities did she undertake as the lady of the Strečno estate and owner of property holdings? How did she contribute to the re-Catholicization of Teplička nad Váhom? And finally – under what circumstances did respect for her arise after her death and how was it influenced by the discovery of her incorrupt body? What expressions of respect have been captured? Was the respect for her only regional, or did it have a broader geographical and social dimension? These questions are attempted to be answered in the monograph Žofia Bosniaková – Life, Work, and Respect in the 17th – 19th Century. Based on the study of historical sources, many of which are still unknown or inaccurately interpreted, it brings a new critical biography of the figure of Žofia Bosniaková.
