Description
Soňa Gyarfašová, in her book They Did Not Let Themselves Be Broken, documents the fates of 21 political prisoners from the 1950s and people persecuted by the communist regime who survived the hardest times of this era – the executions of loved ones, long-term imprisonment, and harassment. They endured forty long years of totalitarianism, yet they did not let themselves be broken. Although their lives were turned upside down, they did not give up. Many of them contributed to today's freedom. The author has been mapping their stories for fifteen years. With the Confederation of Political Prisoners, she returned after a long time to places connected with their past – to the bars of prisons in former Czechoslovakia or to the sites where communist labor camps once stood. She shares personal friendships with many of the protagonists. The stories speak not only of the hardships these people had to endure but also of how they managed to cope with them.
