Description
The reign of Henry VI (1422–1461) from the Lancaster branch of the Plantagenet dynasty culminated in one of the most devastating conflicts ever to take place on the territory of the island kingdom. The authority of the monarch fell into deep decline, the ambitions of powerful aristocratic families divided England, chaos and effective lawlessness reigned in the land. In 1461, the royal crown rested on the brow of Edward, Earl of March, a descendant of the ancient York family. However, it took nearly ten years for Edward IV to achieve decisive success in the battles of Barnet and Tewkesbury, triumphantly completing his victory. The Lancasters were destroyed. Although order and stability returned to England, the desire for the royal crown sowed discord among the members of the ruling dynasty. After the death of Edward IV, the struggle for power reignited. The brief reign of Richard III (1483–1485), which unexpectedly ended with his defeat at Bosworth, marked the end of the Yorks on the English throne. The Tudor family gained a privileged position in the seat of power. England thus entered a new era in its history.
