Description

What if Jay Gatsby was not murdered by George Wilson? At the beginning of the novel, we witness Gatsby's encounter with a woman holding a gun, whose identity remains hidden. We later learn that Gatsby could have been drinking the blood of three heroines of the novel, who pass the narrative baton: his fateful love Daisy Buchanan, the outspoken golfer Jordan Baker, and Catherine McCoy, whose sister disregards well-meaning advice to move to New York with her. Instead, she throws herself into the arms of Tom Buchanan and ultimately, unfortunately, under the wheels of Gatsby's Rolls-Royce. The author faithfully adheres to the skeleton of the original novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, while also introducing us to the past and motivations of her narrators, making them appear much more three-dimensional than in The Great Gatsby. Through the example of two sisterly and one friendly pair, she highlights the strong bonds between women and individual freedom, in contrast to the excessive reliance on a husband as the sole source of happiness and material security. The novel also intertwines the investigation of detective Frank Charles, who suspects that all three women are lying to him.
