Description
A garden where the plains freeze. A mulatto woman smelling of lemon and sea salt. Clinking bottles full of darkness. And also roots that love each other underground, or a fire that ignites under the hand in the river. The fourth poetry collection by Josef Kučera (born 1978) delves into various layers of personal, familial, and cultural memory, as well as poetic imagination — bringing forth discoveries and questions in equal measure. How many lives can we live during our short now and here? The individual poems invite us into exotic landscapes, into places that may not even exist in this world, but also into purely contemporary yet universal backdrops. Sometimes they are symbolic, while at other times they are utterly concrete — which is particularly refreshing in existential poetry. The events we witness are recorded with diagnostic precision, just like the muted inner dramas, and yet we still feel their pulse. And the tempo that the collection gradually picks up due to its composition, leading to a climax and final quietude.
