The theme of the new publication (in Czech and English) presented as a practical "pocket" guide is highly relevant. The issue of urgent ultrasonography is emphasized in many medical fields. A Czech publication focused on point-of-care ultrasonography has been missing from our book market until now. It was written by an expert with experience in caring for critically ill patients who uses this method daily in his practice. The introductory section is dedicated to explaining the basic physical principles of ultrasound, clarifying common terms such as Doppler, M-mode, B-mode, describing ultrasound probes, and screen orientation. The second part is dedicated to the differential diagnosis of shock states. Separate chapters focus on examining the chest and lungs with an emphasis on diagnosing pneumothorax and respiratory failure, diagnosing bleeding, and the causes of circulatory instability in trauma patients. Attention is also given to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and echocardiographic examination of the patient from the perspective of an intensivist. The text is accompanied by images, diagrams, algorithms, and real sonograms.
