A funny and touching story about a boy who spends his first weekend without his parents... and a lion who comes to watch over him. What is this lion like? When the lion allows Oskar to eat as many cookies as he wants and reads him his favorite fairy tale ten times, Oskar realizes that maybe this isn't so bad after all. In just one weekend, Oskar experiences fantastic moments and various adventures at school and beyond. The lion, who can transform into different animals, helps Oskar overcome loneliness, face bullying, and move on not just through time, but mainly through his pain of loss. And at the end, he shows Oskar one more amazing transformation: his own and the boy's. The book uses metaphor and allegory to show – with gentle humor and sensitivity – that it is possible to grieve and move on at the same time and that compassion and love save both the young and the old. The book is among the best children's books in the UK, thanks in part to its wonderful black-and-white illustrations.
