Description
Impoverished noblewoman Elinor is forced to accept a position as a governess in the countryside. However, a mix-up occurs: the carriage takes her to another estate, where Lord Carlyon is expecting a woman who promised to marry a debauched and indebted young man for a fee. When the misunderstanding is explained, news arrives that the young man has been seriously injured in a brawl, and the lord convinces Elinor to marry the dying man. Before the night is over, she is a widow of a man with a bad reputation and the mistress of a bankrupt estate. Moreover, French agents are interested in the old estate, as Elinor's deceased husband seems to have been involved in espionage...
