Description

In her new novel, the author presents three alternative versions of America. The story set in 1893 takes us to the Free States, a part of America that became independent after the Civil War. Here, same-sex unions are recognized and common, so no one stands in David's way. However, his grandfather would like to set him up with the widowed Charles, while David is enchanted by a poor music teacher. In the 1993 story, another hero named David, a young law clerk of Hawaiian descent, maintains a secret affair with his much older and higher-ranking colleague at the law firm. Finally, in 2093, the third, pandemic part of the novel unfolds. Its protagonist is a scientist named Charles, who, along with his husband Nathaniel and son David, leaves their native Hawaii for the USA in search of a better job offer. The three stories are connected by the same places, similarly named characters, and above all, themes: the desire for freedom, the renunciation of tradition, and the ability or inability to navigate a complex world.
