Description
The collective monograph by authors from the Faculty of Arts at Charles University discusses Wagner's infamous essay Judaism in Music and more generally the socio-political aspects of performing Wagner's operas. The individual chapters present various contextualizations of Wagner's essay, the composer's persona, and issues related to the performance and reception of his operas. It does not shy away from placing it in the context of contemporary philosophy and German Romanticism, connections with other Wagnerian writings, the issue of staging Wagner's operas in the State of Israel, or revising commonly accepted notions about caricatures of Jews in Wagner's major musical work, the Ring of the Nibelung. Each of these chapters attempts to problematize a significant aspect of the "Wagner and the Jews" case without striving for a definitive solution. The editors and authors aimed primarily at correcting some entrenched stereotypes and more precisely defining the problem.
