Description
Roštejn Castle is a well-preserved Gothic-Renaissance castle located near Telč. It was built in the second quarter of the 14th century by the Lords of Hradec. They chose a rocky promontory in the middle of the forests near the village of Doupě. It was established as one of a chain of border castles on the edge of the large domain of the Lords of Hradec, a side branch of the Vítkovci family. Its prominent location on the border of Bohemia and Moravia was the reason for the gradual improvement of its defensive capabilities. Around 1353, the castle was surrounded by Gothic fortifications with circular bastions. During the wars between Margraves Jošt and Prokop at the end of the 14th century, the castle's fortifications were expanded. The castle proved its strength during the Hussite Wars when in 1423 it was besieged by Hussites led by Commander Jan Hvězda of Vícemilice. Although he devastated the lower town, the castle itself remained untouched. The Renaissance renovations carried out under Zachariáš of Hradec after 1570 changed the function of the castle. From a watchtower castle, it became a comfortable hunting lodge. Roštejn was raised by one floor, and within the castle, a knight's hall and a chapel were created. A large game preserve was established near the castle. After the extinction of the Lords of Hradec in 1604, the rights of heirs to Roštejn passed to the Slavatas, followed by the Liechtensteins and finally the Podstatští. Significant construction...
