All three novels by Franz Kafka (July 3, 1883 – June 3, 1924) remained unfinished: the novel Amerika (originally titled Nezvěstný, written 1912–1914) was published by Max Brod three years after Kafka's death in 1927. The novel Proces (written 1914–1915) was published in 1925. The novel Zámek was created in 1922, first published in 1926, and in Czech in 1935. Kafka began working on Zámek in January 1922 after a longer period of literary inactivity. The manuscript was created over seven months in Prague, Špindlerův Mlýn, and Planá nad Lužnicí during an extended health leave. Already in March 1922, Kafka read from the manuscript to his friend Max Brod, and by the turn of July and August, the text had approximately the form we know. However, it remained a fragment.
