Synopsis
Long Live the Republic is a powerful coming-of-age war drama set in the final days of World War II in the Moravian countryside. The story unfolds through the eyes of young Olin, who is tasked by his father with leading their mare to safety. When retreating German soldiers take the horse, the boy fears his father’s harsh reaction. As Soviet troops arrive and the war draws to a close, Olin’s journey becomes a deeply personal confrontation with fear, loyalty, and moral confusion. Blending memory, dreams, and reality, the film paints both lyrical and raw images of childhood marked by bullying, a strained relationship with a brutal father, and tender devotion to a loving mother. In its haunting conclusion, the villagers’ treatment of an alleged collaborator reveals unsettling truths about collective guilt and the darker side of human nature. The film was also released under the title Me, Julina and the End of the Great War.
