Synopsis
Three priests offer diverse perspectives on the Polish Catholic Church, highlighting its failings such as pedophilia, corruption, greed, hypocrisy, and issues related to celibacy, alcoholism, and the pursuit of money and power. Director Wojciech Smarzowski delves into parishes, high-ranking church offices, follows altar boys and priests into sacristies, revisits church shelters from the past, and examines the souls of the clergy and parishioners, as if the Ten Commandments did not exist. The film achieved record attendance in Polish cinemas, with over five million viewers, and won several national awards in 2018. It was also successfully released internationally and featured at international festivals. Much of the film was shot in the Czech Republic, particularly the church scenes, due to restrictions on filming in Polish churches. Smarzowski, a renowned director, tackles the most pressing issues of Polish society, naming things directly and unflinchingly.
