Synopsis
City 44 tells the stories of young people living their lives as if each day were their last, not out of bravery or recklessness, but due to the harsh reality they face in 1944 German-occupied Warsaw. For these young Poles, involvement in the underground movement is both a patriotic duty and an adventure, a chance to show off and impress their peers. They flirt and make plans during their resistance training, unaware that the approaching summer will bring the toughest test of their lives. On August 1, 1944, the Polish resistance, represented by the Home Army (Armia Krajowa), launches an uprising to liberate Warsaw from Nazi Germany. Under the leadership of the charismatic Kobra, our heroes form one of the most daring units, witnessing and participating in acts of sacrifice and heroism, but also facing cruelty, betrayal, and murder. Through these experiences, they learn about love and hate, receiving a brutal lesson in coming of age from history.
