Beschreibung
In The Republic, the work that culminates Plato's mature phase, we find all the ideas that will shape his philosophy and that center on two recurring and fundamental motifs for subsequent Western thought: the ultimate identification of happiness with virtue and the contrast between science and appearance. The intimate meaning that the term "philosophy" holds for Plato lies in the identification of one's own life with knowledge, with science, against the world of appearances. As Miguel Candel tells us in his enlightening Introduction: "the timeless value of The Republic, beyond the details of its political and educational program, consists in having made plausible the thesis that the natural correlate of justice is happiness. And this is thanks to having placed the principle of reality, as well as that of theory and praxis, in the same place: in the real idea of the good."
